Life and Death

Sadly the monarch chrysalis I photographed a few days ago appears to have died without hatching. It has been cold and wet here though is a lovely sunny day today – guess it just got the timing wrong. We had been wondering if we should bring some of the others inside as it’s getting very late in the season now, nights are getting much colder and we still have about 18 chrysalises to hatch, half of them in an area which isn’t getting any sun now. I think this gave us the answer.

Having said that, we had another chrysalis hatch this morning and all going well it will fly away this afternoon.

Monarch Butterfly (Female)

Update:

After I posted this I checked on the ‘dead’ chrysalis again, which we had detached from the yucca plant and brought inside, and it was miraculously coming to life! Not a success story in the end though, as the butterfly really struggled to get out of the chrysalis and ended up with very crumpled wings. This one will not be flying away.

Tomorrow we will be bringing some of the others inside so they have a better chance of survival.

Married to a very lucky man (he sometimes agrees), I'm learning to be a better wife, homemaker, & step-mum to two adult children and their other halves. I enjoy thinking, writing, nature, travelling, reading, photography and other creative pursuits, and spending time with friends & family (not necessarily in that order). I work part-time with children & their families. I have too much stuff (working on that) and am not a morning person... that about covers it for now.
